Quarry to Villa: The Journey of Luxury Italian Stone

June 15, 2026Written By Francesca Moretti

The journey of premium natural stone is one of meticulous craftsmanship, patience, and heavy engineering. The journey starts deep within the Apuan Alps of Carrara, Italy, where white marble has been quarried since the Roman Empire.

1. Extraction with Precision

Quarrying is no longer about brute force; it is an art of high precision. Blocks are cut from the mountain walls using diamond wire saws and heavy chain cutters.

Water is continuously sprayed during this process to cool the wire and suppress dust. Once a block is detached—often weighing between 15 to 30 tons—it is carefully inspected for structural integrity and grain pattern.

2. The Slab Processing Center

Once shipped to the local processing plant, the giant block is loaded onto a gang saw or a large diamond wire machine. This cuts the block into individual slabs, usually at thicknesses of 20mm or 30mm.

> "A block that took millions of years to form is sliced into a dozen slabs in just a matter of hours, revealing patterns unseen by human eyes."

After slicing, each slab undergoes polishing or honing. A resin treatment is often applied to fill micro-fissures and strengthen the natural structure of the stone, guaranteeing durability for generations.

3. Shipping and Slab Selection

Slabs are packed into reinforced wooden crates and loaded onto cargo container ships. They travel to galleries across London, New York, and Dubai.

At Lumora Marble, architects and homeowners visit our showroom to view these slabs in person. Because no two slabs are alike, clients select the exact slab that will be installed in their space, viewing the patterns under controlled lighting.

4. Custom Fabrication and Installation

Once selected, the slab is scanned digitally. Computer-aided machinery (CNC) and waterjet cutters shape the stone to fit the exact dimensions of the residential space.

Finally, master installers lift and set the heavy stone in the villa, sealing it to protect against stains and ensuring that the veins align perfectly, completing a journey of beauty and craftsmanship.
